When I was training as a therapist, they used to ask us in class ‘How would you like to specialise when you qualify?’ You might be surprised to learn that the Therapist training in the UK is usually quite general and doesn’t contain specific training for different types of clients.

I have always wanted to work with LGBTQIA+ people (‘The Queer Community’), and also with neurodivergent people. I am a gay man myself and was diagnosed with ADHD in later life, so these communities feel especially close to my heart. At first, however, I did not imagine myself offering therapy for children and young people in Sale and Greater Manchester.

How My Perspective Changed

I never used to consider myself a ‘kids kind of person’, but over time that has changed. In 2021 my sister gave birth to my nephew, Logan, who turned five this year. Spending time with him helped me recognise how naturally I connect with children and young people. I find it really easy to treat kids as their own person, as I think it’s important to make kids of any age not feel patronised. They can spot that a mile off!

Why I Chose to Work as a Child Therapist in Sale

Working with children and young people’s mental health feels deeply meaningful to me for several reasons.

Positive Male Role Models Matter

There is often a shortage of male child therapists in Greater Manchester, and I wanted to help fill that gap. For some boys and young men, having a safe and supportive male therapist can make it easier to open up about difficult feelings.

As someone who tries to stay abreast of current affairs, I have noticed growing awareness of 'the manosphere', which has strengthened my resolve to be a good role model for boys and young men.

Early Support Creates Lasting Change

I find this work incredibly fulfilling.

When children and teenagers receive support early, it can create positive changes that stay with them into adulthood. Helping a young person build confidence, emotional awareness and coping strategies can have a lifelong impact.

Young People Face More Pressure Than Ever

Children and teenagers today face huge pressures.

From social media and body image to school stress, friendship issues and anxiety, young people are navigating challenges that can deeply affect their wellbeing.

I feel passionate about helping them process these pressures in a safe, supportive therapeutic space.

Support for ADHD, Autism and Neurodivergence

There is growing awareness and earlier diagnosis of ADHD, autism and neurodivergence in children and young people.

While early diagnosis can be incredibly helpful in accessing support, it can also bring emotional challenges for both the child and their family.

As someone who is neurodivergent myself and has undertaken additional training, I feel well placed to support children and young people with ADHD, autism and additional needs in Sale and the wider Trafford / Manchester area.
