As a person‑centred counsellor, I get asked: “What is person‑centred counselling?” To put it simply, it’s a way of working with you that respects your individuality, your feelings, and your innate ability to move towards growth and healing.

THE HISTORY OF PERSON CENTRED COUNSELLING

Person-Centred therapy was developed by psychologist Carl Rogers in the 1940s and is based on the belief that every person has within themselves the resources and strength to overcome their own challenges. Although it was developed in the USA, Person- Centred Therapy has found a home in the UK and is widely practiced here. As a therapist, I don’t tell my clients what to do, nor do I give them ‘solutions’. Instead, I create a safe, accepting space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and struggles openly and without judgement.

THE ROLE OF THE COUNSELLOR

During our therapy sessions, my role is to walk alongside you on your journey - not as an expert, but as a fellow human being. The focus is on listening deeply and offering understanding. Through accepting, empathic, and genuine relationships, I help my clients gain greater self‑awareness and trust in their own judgment. As a Person-Centred Therapist, I value the importance of building a deep and trusting relationship between the therapist and the client.

"We think we listen, but very rarely do we listen with real understanding, true empathy. Yet listening, of this very special kind, is one of the most potent forces for change that I know." - Carl Rogers

THE CORE CONDITIONS

Person‑centred therapy is built upon three core conditions:

  • Empathy: Understanding the client’s experience from your point of view.

  • Congruence: Being genuine and open as a therapist.

  • Unconditional Positive Regard: Accepting you the client fully, regardless of your feelings or choices.

These conditions create an environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings openly and begin to make changes that feel right for you.

WHY CHOOSE PERSON CENTRED COUNSELLING?

People often choose person‑centred counselling when:

  • They want a space to be listened to without judgement, and to be truly understood.

  • They’re seeking deeper self‑awareness.

  • They want to build trust in their own feelings and decisions.

  • They’re feeling stuck or disconnected and want support finding their way forward.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A SESSION

Each session is unique, led by you the client and your needs. You can expect:

  • To be treated with respect and understanding.

  • To be encouraged to explore your thoughts and feelings openly.

  • To have a space free from judgment or pressure.

AND FINALLY...

Person‑centred counselling is about you - your thoughts, feelings, and lived experience. I don’t impose labels or try to ‘fix’ you. Instead, I offer a nurturing space where you can rediscover your strength, find clarity, and move towards a more fulfilling life.

If you’re considering therapy and want a supportive, collaborative space to understand yourself better, person‑centred counselling could be the right fit for you.
